History of Museum

At the Sharpsteen Museum, our mission is to preserve the history of Calistoga and the Upper Napa Valley from its early days to post World War I. Our exhibits tell the story of the people and changes brought by the period of U.S. emigration and development.

Unique and extraordinarily extensive dioramas are used to depict Calistoga during its time as an elegant 1860s Hot Springs resort developed by Sam Brannan. Mr. Brannan was California’s first millionaire who was well known as a pioneer, promoter, publisher, and entrepreneur. Sharpsteen Museum has fun events and special exhibits that change every six months to reflect the varied interests of the people of Napa.

You can find memorabilia of Ben’s career at Disney Studios, including one of his Oscars, in the founders’ room of the Sharpsteen Museum. The room is also home to antique auto hubcaps, emblems and displays of the family history.

The Sharpsteen Museum has received another award. We have received Trip Expert’s 2018 Expert’s Choice Award. This award is based on over one million reviews from 85 leading travel guides, magazines, and  newspapers. We have received this award because professionals recognize us as among the best attractions in Napa Valley. This entitles us to display a digital badge on our website which says “Expert’s Choice”.
